Fantastic training with our Scottish team mates at the weekend. Technical Seminar on Saturday and observing their Black Belt grading on the Sunday.
For the technical seminar, 2 sessions were run, the morning for coloured and black belt members and the afternoon for seniors and black belts only . Both sessions were run by T-UK Masters, Master Archer and Master Ridley who took it in turn to go through in detail elements of kicks, breaking down each technique step by step and answering some great questions from the students. Everyones contribution was greatly appreciated and it was also a fantastic fitness session.
On Sunday, several of the Scottish students had their Black Belt grading, again under the watchful eyes of Master Archer, Master Ridley, their nervous instructors and Scotia's lead instructor Mr David Condie. There was a range of grades, some going for 1st degree, some going for star gradings and some going for 2nd degree. You could not fault their focus and determination to do well.
Two students that impressed most were two ladies going for their 1st degree black belts, Lesley and Gillian, both women of maturer age, good friends that started Taekwon-Do together around 5 years ago and have stuck at it to this day. They were very inpirationa,l breaking the mould and proving that modern martial arts is for everyone, no matter what age and gender you are. They made no excuses and did not let anything hold them back, going full effort on all aspects of their grading, they truly deserve the title of Black Belt.
All were amazing and the Scottish never cease to amaze me, their commitment to training several times a week and a fantastic bunch of instructors are some of the reasons why their standards are so high. It was an absolute pleasure to train with them.
Whilst in Scotland, it was also an absolute honour to attend the "50th year in TKD" celebrations and evening dinner for GrandMaster Tom MacCallum, former ITF Secretary General and ITF Icon. GM MacCallum started his TKD journey in 1969 and this event was a wonderful commemoration of his time in TKD. His sons, both senior martial artists and his wife were there and provided a wonderful slide show highlighting key times in his life and his work alongside our founder General Choi Hong Hi. A huge well done to T-UK's Scotia instructor Mr David Condie for organising such a wonderful event.
