A group of Cambridge students made the journey over to Stratford-Upon-Avon on Saturday 27th October to take part in the GTUK Regional Championships.
After an early start, we all met outside the venue before things got underway and wished eachother luck for the day. Master Oldham (VIII) opened the event with an encouraging speech, commenting on the GTUK teams' recent successes abroad and outlining future plans.
Nerves were put to one side and the competition got underway with the junior events, moving on to the adults, both coloured and black belt as the day progressed. Our students tried to relax whilst keeping warm and chatting to their fellow competitors, some of whom they already knew from previous tournaments.
The day was intersected by a demonstration by the England male and female teams, with 'guest appearances' by Mr Ridley (V degree, England coach) and Mr Archer (V degree, GTUK Vice-President), who showed off some impressive breaking with a flying long side kick and a punch break on a stack of paving blocks. The teams included in their sequence the men's and ladies' gold medal winning team patterns from the Hong Kong Cyberport Cup.
As the competition resumed it became apparent that Cambridge were having a successful day and it ended with a cache of 13 medals in all. These were converted to points and made up the majority of the score for Region Five, which achieved second place in the National league table with 92 points. The winners were Scotland with 107 points. Mr Crisp and Miss Ross were proud to accept a trophy from Master Oldham (VIII) on behalf of the club at the end of the day. Congratulations to all who participated for your nerve and spirit. You made us proud!
